Film Trailer | The Last Stand

With this week’s release of The Expendables 2 (2012), the familiar Arnold Schwarzenegger catchphrase “I’ll be Back” has been in full usage of late. His next acting endeavour will see him tackle the role of an ageing small town Sheriff in Jee-woon Kim’s The Last Stand (2012), Arnie’s first leading role since 2003′s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Earlier this week we got a look at the poster for the upcoming action flick, and now the first teaser trailer has been unveiled. And if the first bit of footage is any indication, yes – the ex-Governator is indeed back.

Film Review | The Expendables 2

Only 2 years after their first outing, Sylvester Stallone & co are back once again for the eagerly anticipated The Expendables 2. The unique selling point that is the coming together of tough guys from era’s past and present failed to click last time out, but while that first effort may have been lacklustre, the sequel succeeds in delivering a thick slice of fun cinematic entertainment. If you’re a fan of action movies, this is a must-see.

Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow returns to the deserts of the Middle East in Zero Dark Thirty (2012), her first film since 2008′s Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker, which now has its first trailer. The fact that the film used to be entitled Kill Bin Laden should leave you in no doubt as to its content. Zero Dark Thirty will chronicle the ten-year manhunt for Osama Bin Laden, right up to the attack on a Pakistani compound by Navy Seals which resulted in the Al Qaeda leader’s death on 2 May, 2011.

Film Review | A Simple Life

Having made a clean sweep in all the major categories at the Hong Kong film awards, A Simple Life finally gets its UK release this week. Directed by Hong Kong veteran Ann Hui, the film depicts the growing bond between an ageing servant and her employer whilst offering a refreshingly optimistic perspective of life in the face of inevitable death. Although its pacing may limit its appeal, the first rate performances by the two leads make A Simple Life one of the most moving films of the year.

Film Review | Ted

With his live-action directorial debut Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) utilizes the talking animal shtick once again with Ted, which features a talking teddy bear as its main protagonist. The premise is as ridiculous as it sounds, but thanks to the accomplished trio of MacFarlane, Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, it is one of the more enjoyable comedies of the year. Having gone into this without having watched an episode of MacFarlane’s popular TV show, I found myself eager to see more of the director’s small-screen work.
