As the annual summer blockbuster season draws ever nearer, more and more previously confidential information on some of this year’s biggest releases are now beginning to be revealed. The latest to get in on the act is J. J. Abrams’ sci-fi sequel Star Trek into Darkness (2013). It seems more than likely that Abrams, who will now also be directing Star Wars: Episode VII, won’t be returning for any future Star Trek sequels, such is the competition between the two rival franchises. However, everything we have seen thus far suggests that he’ll be leaving this current franchise on a high, and a mouth-watering second full-length trailer released online today gives further credence to the early impressions.

When a shocking act of terror from within their own organisation leaves Starfleet reeling, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) defies regulations and embarks on his own personal mission to bring the perpetrators to justice. The trailer shows off more spectacular action and destruction, from a narrow escape to many scenes of carnage in London. The threat of Benedict Cumberbatch’s calculating villain is emphasised by some cooly delivered dialogue – “I will walk over your cold corpses” – and the actor looks to be delivering a scenery chewing performance.

Additionally, the new footage also puts some of Kirk’s superiors in the spotlight, with Admiral Pike (Bruce Greenwood) seen reprimanding the young Captain for his disregard of the rules. Also present in the trailer are the rest of Kirk’s crew including returning players Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Jon Cho and Simon Pegg, in addition to newcomers Peter Weller (Robocop) and Alice Eve, who plays Kirk’s love interest Dr. Carol Marcus.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek into Darkness will beam into UK cinemas on 17 May, 2013.
