Film Review | Transcendence

Transcendence-2014-Movie-Poster-Wallpaper

★★☆☆☆

Helmed by Christopher Nolan’s longtime DoP Wally Pfister and packing an all-star cast, there were plenty of reasons to be excited about Transcendence (2014). Sadly, the end result is a disappointing mess of a movie which fails to deliver on its strong premise.

Transcendence follows Will Caster (Johnny Depp), one of the leading minds in artificial intelligence research along with his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall). That makes them the target of anti-tech extremists, and an assassination attempt leaves Will wounded and dying from a radioactive bullet. With time running out, Evelyn and colleague Max (Paul Bettany) hatch a desperate plan to upload Will’s consciousness into an experimental A.I. Evelyn and Max ultimately succeed in their Neuromancer-esque goal, but as Will’s thirst for knowledge and power grows stronger, technological advancement soon gives way to fear and paranoia.

Director Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger gallops into cinemas this week, delivering lively and enjoyable blockbuster entertainment even if it lacks the freshness and swagger of his Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003).

Film Trailer | The Lone Ranger

THE LONE RANGER

The action-packed trailers for next year’s big summer blockbusters just keep on coming this week, with the latest film to offer up some new footage being The Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger (2013). A brief teaser trailer debuted all the way back in October, and now we have a full two-minute look at this big screen Hollywood re-imagining of the popular 1950s American television series. For the previously uninitiated, The Lone Ranger will see former Texas ranger John Reid (Armie Hammer) join forces with native American ‘spirit warrior Tonto’ (Verbinski regular Johnny Depp) as the two work together to fight corruption in the dangerous canyons and plains of the Wild West.

Film Trailer | The Lone Ranger

It would seem that Gore Verbinski enjoys working with Johnny Depp almost as much as Tim Burton does. Having collaborated on The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as well as Rango (2011), the pair have re-teamed once more for The Lone Ranger (2013), a re-imagining of the 1950s television series. Earlier this week, the first official poster was revealed and now we have a slightly blurred teaser trailer of the Jerry Bruckheimer produced blockbuster for your viewing pleasure. The Lone Ranger will follow the exploits of former Texas Ranger John Reid (Armie Hammer) as seen through the eyes of Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Depp) as the unlikely heroes work together to combat the corruption surrounding the rise of rail-roads.

Film Review | Dark Shadows

Long has esteemed character actor Johnny Depp been large-haired filmmaker Tim Burton’s muse for the director’s brooding visions, with many of those team-ups little more than tinkering with already established characters. Predictably, Burton and Depp’s latest outing, the horror-comedy Dark Shadows (2012) – their eighth collaboration together – doesn’t even try to buck that trend.

Based on the cult US TV show of the same name, the film sees 18th century lothario Barnabas Collins (Depp) turned into a vampire and buried alive after breaking the heart of evil witch Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). Nearly two centuries later, Barnabas is accidentally freed from his tomb and, returning to his hometown of Collinwood, finds the dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family in disarray. Intent on restoring his family’s fishing business to its former glory, he is met with opposition in the form of the spurned witch.
