From Orson Welles in 1948 to Roman Polanski in 1971, William Shakespeare’s Macbeth has undergone many stage and screen adaptations in its 400 year plus history. The latest attempt to translate it to the silver screen comes from Justin Kurzel. It’s only the second feature from the Australian director, but he accomplishes an impressive feat in distinguishing his take from all that has come before it. It’s just unfortunate that much of Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter is undecipherable.
After giving us what is now the definitive zom-com Shaun of the Dead and following it up with the equally enjoyable Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright’s cornetto trilogy concludes with the eagerly awaited The World’s End this month. Whilst good fun in its own right, the final instalment doesn’t quite reach the lofty heights of its predecessors.

Ol Parker, the scriptwriter behind The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, is on directorial duties in Now is Good, a predictable drama about a teenage girl (Dakota Fanning) dying from leukaemia. Based on Jenny Downham’s novel Before I Die, on paper it would seem that Now is Good has all the required elements for an emotive watch. However, what we get instead is a frequently galling drama that fails to translate Downham’s award-winning text into watchable cinema.
